NOTICE OF MOTION

I give notice that, on the next day of sitting I shall move that

the Senate:

condemns the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs for his

intemperate and unjustified attack on the Senate Committee system and, in particular, the work of the Select Committee on the Administration of Aboriginal Affairs

rejects Mr Hand's assertion that civil liberties are threatened by the operation of Senate committees, that individuals have no right of reply and that the current inquiry into Aboriginal Affairs policy is a "political stunt"

reminds the Minister that the Aboriginal Affairs Committee has a majority of Government members

calls on the Leader of the Government, on behalf of the Prime Minister, to dissociate the Government from Mr Hand's comments and from similar attacks by the Premiers of Western Australia and Victoria

reaffirms its confidence in the integrity of the Committee system which has enjoyed all-Party support for a period of

almost 20 years.
