SENATE ESTIMATES COMMITTEE TO PROBE AIR SAFETY

The Opposition welcomes the agreement reached today for the recall of one of the Estimates Committees of the Senate to examine safety issues arising out of the pilots' dispute.

This will provide a prompt and appropriate forum for the numerous matters to be dealt with.

As a result of discussions with the Government this morning, the Opposition will not at this stage proceed with its motion to establish a Senate Select Committee on air safety.

Estimates Committee B will reconvene next Wednesday and will have before it officers of the Civil Aviation Authority.

The wish of the Opposition is for the earliest possible opportunity for Parliament to check the various allegations which have been made about the administration of safety requirements. Air safety is a matter squarely within the

responsibility of the Commonwealth Government and the recall of the Estimates Committee is a sensible and prompt response to matters which have caused widespread concern.
