The Federal Opposition has launched i nrrn 1 ~ I nnirl da αΒΙ<η1ί η" α < π ο α ■ c a m p a i g n in M e l b o u r n e t o d a y which will involve the aggressive

marketing of coalition policies and values to the small business s e c t o r , shadow Minister for Housing and small B u s i n e s s , Alexander Downer announced t o d a y .

T h e c a m p a i g n w i l l i n v o l v e the r e l e a s e of a s p e c i f i c Sm a l l

B u s i n e s s p o l i c y by the c o a l i t i o n a n d an ext e n s i v e program of

small Business Forums around A u s t r a l i a .

" i want every small business from Cape York to cape Leeuwin to

u n d e r s t a n d t h a t the L i b e r a 1/ N a t i o n a 1 Parties are unequivically the Parties of capitalism.

*l w i l l be p r o m o t i n g the commitments of the Coalition - to be

sp e l t o u t in the sm a l l b u s i n e s s p o l i c y - to b r o adening share

o w n e r s h i p , to d e v e l o p i n g business education p r o g r a m s , lowering and simplifying the taxation s y s t e m , promoting new and creative methods of financing small b u s i n e s s e s , introducing an enterprise- b a s e d i n d u s t r i a l relatione system and providing more resources

for th e T r a d e P r a c t i c e s Commission to ensure it can guarantee

competitive and fair markets.

"By the time of the next Federal election no-one will be in any

d o u b t t h a t the L i b e r a l and N a t i o n a l p a r t i e s are the standard

b e a r e r s of t h e s m a l l b u s i n e s s c o m m u n i t y in t h e F e d e r a l

Parliament", Mr Downer said.

"it is too often overlooked that the Coalition side of politics

is p h i l o s o p h i c a l l y c o m m i t t e d t o s m a l l , c o m p e t i t i v e ,

entrepreneurial enterprises whereas the ALP is committed to the corporate state a n d , in business t e r m s , a few mates at the big

end of t o w n ” , Mr Downer s a i d .

"By the time the next election c o m e s , I am confident no-one in

the small b u s i n e s s c o m m u n i t y w ill have f a i l e d to h e a r that

message" .

Mr Downer said he was concerned small business operators were not fully aware of the coalition's stand on key business issues such

as the capital gains and fringe benefits taxes as well as reforms

to the industrial relatione system even though the Coalition had taken a perfectly clear stand on those i s s u e s .

"small businesses are screaming for tax relief and for reforms in

i n d u s t r i a l r e l a t i o n e such as e n t e r p r i s e - b a s e d w a g e fixing,

v o l u n t a r y unionism and secret strike ballots. we will deliver

those things" .

Mr D o w n e r said the p o l i t i c a l r e l e v a n c e of the small business

s e c t o r s h o u l d n e v e r be u n d e r e s t i m a t e d and nor s h o u l d the

Coalition take small business support for granted.

"in the 1983 e l e c t i o n it is e s t i m a t e d the s w i n g against the

Coalition amongst small business voters was three times as great as the general community swing.

"At the n ext e l e c t i o n , that w ill be m o r e t h a n reversed", Mr

Downer said.
