PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA * THE SENATE

SENATOR CHRISTOPHER PUPLlCK SHADOW MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENT, ARTS AND THE BICENTENARY

IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS STATEMENT

Cl/89 9.1.89

COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY LIBRARY MICAH

TASMANIAN LIBERALS LEADING AGAIN TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT

The strong stand taken by Liberal Premier Robin Gray and Environment Minister Peter Hodgman over the minimum environmental standards to be set for the proposed Wesley Vale pulp mill show that once again a Liberal Government is

leading the way in environment protection.

The standards proposed by Minister Hodgman are fair and reasonable; they are necessary and they are all technically feasible. It is absolutely vital that discharges both in terms of water and air pollution are subject to the

strictest regulation. Concerns about dioxin and about water quality cannot be ignored. It is absolutely proper that developers should be required to meet the associated costs,

Threats by the pulp mill proponents are an insult to the Tasmanian Government, its people and all Australians concerned with protection of the environment. They should be treated with contempt. After the appalling sloppy and inadequate Environment Impact Statement submitted by the proponents, one of the most second-rate pieces of work I have ever seen, the impertinence of the proponents is almost unbelievable.

The pioneering legislation already enacted by the Tasmanian Government for protection of the atmosphere against ozone depleting substances, proposals to eliminate TBT (tin paint) pollution and the recent nomination of further areas for World Heritage Listing by the Gray Government entitles the

Tasmanian Liberals to claim a position of clear national leadership in protection of the Australian environment.
