NEWS RELEASE Neil BrOWIl QC, M P Shadow Attorney-General 17/89

ANOTHER OBSTACLE TO USING THE Γ.Ο.Ι. ACT

Every day, new evidence emerges of obstacles that

the Government puts in the w a y of people using the Freedom

of Information A c t .

The Government is simply turning the Act into a

f a r c e .

The latest evidence is the Government's response to my request for documents on the advertising campaign for the "Year of Citizenship". ' '

The Government, through the Department of

Immigration, has replied saying it wants $2,851.54 before any of its documents 8n this campaign will be released. It

also wants a deposit of 25% before any w ork will be done on

the request.

This is clearly one more attempt to block the use

of the FOI Act, to frustrate its use and to deter the public

from using the Act.

Unfortunately, this is part of a regular pattern

which is n o w followed when the FOI Act is u s e d .

Departments levy exorbitant charges, insist on a

deposit, make technical objections to releasing documents and cover up parts of documents that might be embarrassing

to the Government.

It is clear that the Government goes through this

charade to frustrate the proper workings of the Act.
