MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE HON. WAL. FIFE, M.P., MEMBER FOR HUME, SHADOW MINISTER FOR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES AND MANAGER OF OPPOSITION BUSINESS IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The newly elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Representatives, Mr. Wal. Fife, 'today called" A, on' all Liberals at both' the party.and organisational levels, to 5

'Cunite/behind the new leadership of the parliamentary party and

concentrate on bringing about a change of government.

"What we now have to do is to address ourselves to those economic matters that are of grave concern to Australia and its people", Mr. Fife said.

"They are matters that bite deep and are hurting many families, especially those struggling to own their own home and raise and educate their children.

"Accordingly, as an alternative government we now must and will, put the past behind us and keep our eye on the ball.

"We have to set our mind on providing the effective leadership that Australians are crying out for in the current bleak economic climate.

"Any change at the leadership level is awkward

and we have had problems in the changeover.

"In the process we tripped; we had a fracture, a fracture which is now healing. Moreover, as with all fractures,

I am confident we can come back stronger than ever.

"We have every reason to be confident. We have a talented Shadow Cabinet, we have exceptional talent joining our ranks around the country as candidates for both safe and marginal seats and we have a sound policy base.

"Labor is running scared. They've dropped the

ball. I'm confident that the Liberal and National Parties will be ready to fill the void", Mr. Fife said.
