MINISTER OPENS CABOOLTURE OFFICE

The Minister for Social Security, Brian Howe, today officially opened a new social security office at Caboolture in Queensland.

"This new 'local' office means people will no longer have to travel the 25km or so into the regional DSS office in Redcliffe," Mr Howe said.

"Its opening is further proof of the Department’s commitment to equality of access to social security for all its clients.

"Many young families who are settling in the surrounding growth areas will be able to use the Caboolture office for lodging claims for payments such as Family Allowance and Family Allowance Supplement.

"Clients in more outlying areas such as Bribie Island and Kilcoy will also benefit from the more accessible service provided by this new office."

Applications for all social security payments can be lodged at the Caboolture office. A social worker will also visit the office every week to assist clients.

The new office, at 11 Hasking St, is close to the Commonwealth Emplyoment Service (CES) office in James St.

"The proximity of these two offices will assist many social security clients, especially longer term unemployed people who are taking part in the NEWSTART program," Mr Howe said.

"NEWSTART involves both offices working closely together to give special assistance to people aged 21 to 54 who have been out of work for more than 12 months."

Before travelling to Caboolture, Mr Howe today officially launched the NEWSTART program in Blacktown in Sydney's western suburbs.
