GOOD PROSPECTS FOR COAL SALES TO BRITAIN

Deregulation and privatisation of the British electricity industry should enable substantial increases in Australian sales of coal to Britain.

The Minister for Resources, Senator Peter Cook, said today that his discussions in London with the British Secretary of State for Energy, Cecil Parkinson, had confirmed that excellent opportunities exist for new sales of Australian coal, even

though domestic coal will continue to supply the bulk of UK power station needs.

"We are extremely competitive, in price, on the British market. We are also an extremely reliable, efficient supplier of coal. British privatisation will lead to open competition and an increase in coal imports and we are very well placed to

take advantage of all those opportunities," said Senator Cook.
