NEWS RELEASE BY LIONEL BOWEN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND ATTORNEY-GENERAL

INCREASE IN COURT FEES

COMMONWEALTH P ARUAME NT A RY Lib K A R'< MIC AH

PThe'Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General, Mr Lionel ‘ -Bowen, today announced increases to the filing fees in the Federal Court of Australia, the Family Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory and the

Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Mr Bowen also announced a number of new and increased fees in the Australian Capital Territory Magistrates Court.

He said the new fees in the Australian Capital Territory Magistrates Court would be comparable to similar fees in the States.

"The fees in the Federal Court, Family Court and Administrative Appeals Tribunal were last increased in September 1987. The Supreme Court fees were increased in June 1988 to bring them into line with those charged in the other *g superior courts administered by the Commonwealth."

The Government will, in the Budget process, be reviewing the resources available to each of the courts and Administrative Appeals Tribunal. In that process the revenue generated by them will be a significant factor in settling final resource matters.

The new fees, which will take effect on 1 July 1989, are set _ out in the attachment.

In addition to these increased and new fees Mr Bowen announced that certain amendments have been made to the Bankruptcy Rules which come into operation on 1 July 1989.

These amendments will increase the fees payable for applications to the Federal Court in its Bankruptcy Division to bring them into line with fees in that Court's other jurisdictions.

The fees for searches of the Bankruptcy Register and for the copying of documents are increased to reflect the cost of these services.

The amendments also introduce new fees in respect of applications by persons for registration as Trustees which are intended to cover the cost of the services performed by the Official Receiver in connection with the application.
