TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW WITH FRANK ALCORTA, SUNDAY TERRITORIAN, DARWIN, 28 JANUARY 1989

E & Ο E - PROOF ONLY

ALCORTA: inaudible

PM: I am very happy to be able to announce that as a result of the very strong representations that have been put by my colleague Warren Snowden and as well of course by Senator Bob Collins, I can announce to you that the airports at Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Darwin will be handed over

to the Federal Airports Corporation on 1st April 1989.

ALCORTA: Thank you Prime Minister -PM: But further than that the situation will be that there will be a major redevelopment of their own facilities here, commencing shortly including an international airport

terminal at a cost of some $65 million. The particular details of the timetable for going ahead with that construction will be worked out in consultation with the Northern Territory Government. But that decision has been made and will be a major development of the facilities

including, as I say, the international airport facility of $65 million, developments at Alice Springs involving - have already started - it will involve some $20 million. In all

these developments there will be full consultation with the Northern Territory Government, with airport users, with communities and local government groups so that in these developments - which is what you've been asking for - we are pleased to be able to give it now. We hope the interests of

everyone will be taken into account. So I'm very proud and pleased to be able make this announcement and the people of the Territory certainly should be very deeply indebted to Warren Snowden. He hasn't been off our backs on it.
