STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON. P.J. KEATING, MP

DEDUCTIBILITY OF GIFTS TO NURSING MOTHERS' ASSOCIATION

The Government has decided to amend the income tax law to allow deductions for gifts to the value of $2 or more made on or after 10 November 1989 to the Nursing Mothers' Association.

The Government makes such changes only in exceptional circumstances where the organisation demonstrates that it provides a unique and useful service to the community.

The Nursing Mothers' Association, which provides advice and support to mothers who choose to breastfeed, relies heavily on financial support from the community to continue its operations and expand its role.

The association was formed in 1964 to broaden the awareness of the difficulties faced by nursing mothers and to provide education, information and practical support through individual counselling and group activities.

Legislation to give effect to the Government's decision will be introduced as soon as practicable.
