New board appointments for Telecom and Australia Post

Additional appointments to the boards of the Australian Telecommunications Corporation and the Australian Postal Corporation were announced today by the Minister for Transport and Communications, Ralph Willis.

Mr Alan Woods AC is the new member of the board of Telecom and Mr Michael Fleming is the new appointment to the board of Australia Post.

Both appointments are for five years.

Mr Woods, 58, is the recently retired Secretary of the Department of Defence. Before embarking on a career spanning 33 years in the Australian Public Service, Mr Woods worked for Dunlop Rubber Australia. He is a Barrister-at-law, a qualified

accountant and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. Mr Woods has served on a number of national institutions including the Australian Industry Development Corporation, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Australian

Shipbuilding Board and the Metric Conversion Board.

Mr Fleming was Senior Private Secretary to the former Minister for Communications, Michael Duffy, MP, is a Barrister at the Victorian Bar and holds Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws degrees. He has practised as a solicitor and was Associate

to High Court Justice Sir Gerard Brennan.

Mr Willis said both directors would bring experience in legal matters and in Government organisations to the newly-constituted boards of Telecom and Australia Post.

"Mr Woods' appointment completes the formation of the nine-member Telecom board, and three vacancies remain on the board of Australia Post.

"The Government expects to fill these vacancies shortly," Mr Willis added.
