A prominent figure in Australia's motor industry, Mr W. L. (Bill) Dix, AO, of Melbourne will be the new Chairman of Qantas Airways.

Transport and Communications Minister Ralph Willis announced Mr Dix’s five-year appointment today.

Mr Dix, who takes up his position with Qantas on 1 December 1989, succeeds Mr Jim Leslie who is retiring after 10 years with Qantas, including nine years as Chairman of the Board.

"Mr Dix has had extensive experience in running large business enterprises - in both the private sectors in Australia and overseas, especially Europe and Japan," Mr Willis said.

"His expertise will be invaluable in what is a challenging time in Qantas1 development."

Mr Dix is Chairman of the Ford Motor Company of Australia, Deputy Chairman of Telecom Australia, a member of the Business Council of Australia, an executive committee member of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and Chairman of the Australian Manufacturing Council.

The Minister thanked Mr Leslie for his dedication and commitment to the airline, both as Director and as Chair of the Board.

"He has presided over a spectacular turnaround in Qantas’ performance from a position as a lossmaker in the early 1980s to one which has seen the enterprise return considerable profits in recent years," Mr Willis said.

Other members of the Qantas board are J. N. Davenport (Vice Chair), W. Bolitho, J. Broadbent, S . Crean, J. P. Ducker, R. Geitzelt, J. Horgan, S. Same and J. W. Utz.
