GOVERNMENT HUMILIATED - FREEDOM RESTORED

Today's High Court decision brings to an end a sorry episode in Australian democracy.

The political advertising ban was imposed solely to suit the Labor Party's political interests at the time. It offended every principle of an open democracy. .

Like its attack on the flag, the Labor Party was prepared to destroy a basic institution - the traditional right to freedom of expression - to serve its own political ends. It was aided by the Australian Democrats in their usual wishy washy way.

Throughout this episode, the Coalition Parties have stood steadfastly by the principle of free political speech.

We welcome the High Court's decision.

No doubt Mr Keating will accept it as it will now suit him to have political advertising restored so that the Labor Party can mount a massive scare campaign in a desperate but futile attempt to cling to power.

Such is the cynicism which now drives the Labor Party.

But in doing so, Mr Keating must accent that not only has this whole exercise been a misguided perversion of democratic principles but also that the legislation has been botched from start to finish by his Minister for Administrative Services^. He should now fire the bungling Senator Bolkus.
