LOG ON TO SAVE OUR WHALES

Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, is urging Western Victorians to log on to the new Australian Government website www.saveourwhales.gov.au, which contains information about whales and how Australia is helping to protect them.

Mr Hawker said that ‘Save our Whales’ wristbands are also available from his office, which have been designed to direct people to the new website and raise awareness of whale protection measures.

“With Whale season about to begin in the South West, I’m urging all Wannon residents to log on to the new website to find out about how we protect our whales, which are one of the South West’s biggest tourist drawcards,” he said.

“School children in particular will find the website a very handy resource.

“For over 25 years the Australian Government has pursued a permanent global ban on commercial whaling and worldwide protection for whales through the International Whaling Commission (IWC). This is a matter of great importance to many Western Victorians and to the Australian Government.

“The Coalition Government has spent considerable time and effort over many years on whale conservation, and the community sentiment on this issue has been overwhelming, with many members of the community expressing support for the Government’s position.

“Many pro-whaling countries will be pushing for a return to commercial whaling at the next IWC meeting in the Caribbean next month. Australia, together with our pro-conservation allies including New Zealand and the United Kingdom, will be pushing to see the ban on commercial whaling continued and an end to whaling under the guise of science,” Mr Hawker said.

The new Australian Government website, which includes a range of information products about whale protection and also information for kids and teachers, can be found at www.saveourwhales.gov.au.

Wristbands can be obtained from Mr Hawker’s office on 1300 131 692 (local call cost).
