ANDREW PEACOCK SAYS STRONG INTEREST SHOWN IN THE FUTURE OF OUR DEFENCE FORCE

Mr Andrew Peacock, Chair of the Defence Review 2000, Community Consultation Team, says he has been pleased with the enthusiasm shown by people around the country in expressing their views about the future of Australia’s defence force.

The team, also comprising Dr David MacGibbon, Mr Stephen Loosley and MAJGEN Adrian Clunies-Ross (retired), has now completed its program of 28 nation-wide public meetings, which began in Adelaide on the 18 July and ended in Bunbury on Monday.

In addition, it met representatives from State Governments, key industry, academic and interest groups during the consultation program.

Mr Peacock said the team would now develop its report for the Minister for Defence by the end of September, incorporating the views gathered from the community.

"Over 2000 people attended the public meetings and more than 680 submissions have been received. We will now work on developing a comprehensive report for Mr Moore that encapsulates the thoughts and opinions of all those Australians who have made the effort to participate in the consultation process.

"This level of public consultation on defence issues is unprecedented and I’m confident that the Government, having instituted this open public process, will fully consider our report during the development of the new Defence Policy Statement expected later this year," Mr Peacock said.
