President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission

The Government is currently considering the future appointment to the position of president of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

I have spoken with the current president Sir Ronald Wilson and informed him that the Government has decided that his term as president will not be extended again.

I have offered Sir Ronald a position as a hearing commissioner with HREOC and he has indicated that he will now give it his consideration.

As I have previously expressed publicly, I extend my admiration and gratitude to Sir Ronald for the service he has provided to Australia. Sir Ronald's service as Solicitor General of Western Australia, as a High Court Justice and as president of HREOC has been an outstanding contribution to our nation.

Arrangements are in place for the functions and duties of the president to continue to be performed following the conclusion of Sir Ronald's term. There will be an announcement about the future appointment in due course.
