LABOR'S URANIUM POLICY HYPOCRISY ON SOUTH AFRICA - .
The Federal Government was lifting trade bans on uranium-rich South Africa while stubbornly refusing new uranium mines in Australia, Senator Grant Tarnbling said today. Senator Tambling said Labor's hypocrisy would disadvantage Australia once sanction-free South Africa re-entered world markets.
"Both South Africa and Australia have tremendous proven reserves of low-cost uranium and, as a result of recent developments, both can trade on world markets.
"However, unlike South Africa, we have a Federal Government that believes in restricting uranium production, undermining competitiveness and losing export dollars. Consequently, we have fewer development prospects and fewer job prospects."
Senator Tambling raised the uranium issue in senate Question Time today when he called on Trade Minister, Senator Peter Cook, to explain Australia's policy inconsistencies.
"I aalcod Son~~or cook how Au~trd11a l.n~enaeC1 to meet the South
African challenge and whether the Federal Government would drop its notorious three-mine uranium policy. "Amazingly, Senator Cook said there was no need for review.
"The three-mine policy makes a mockery of recent international statements by the Prime Minister _ and Foreign Minister and contradicts the Government's rhetoric about level playing fields. "I am appalled that Australia's Trade Minister is unable to recognise future trade challenges and adapt his way of thinking.
"After all, why does Australia neeq to hand over p.x~nrT rlollar~ to Lht:: rest: ot ene world? Isn't our uranium or our uranium industry good enough in Labor's eyes?"
