BIG BOOST IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE'S ACTIVITIES
Young people living in Bendigo, Keilor, Brunswick and Springvale will soon have a new youth activities service designed especially for them. Youth activities services in these areas will receive Federal Government funds of S38J~OO for ~apital expenditure and S145,030
for ongoing operating costs. The Federal Minister for Aged, Family and Health Services, Peter Staples, said the Federal Government would allocate S285,000 to youth activities services across Victoria in 1992-93 for operating costs and S190,500 for capital expenditure.
"The Federal Government pledged in 1990 to provide S9 million over three years for youth activities services throughout Australia," Mr Staples said.
"The funding of these services is part of our plan to make that pledge a reality. "
The DEn prugrams will be aimeq at young people aged between 11 and 16 and are designed to buila self-esteem, asserti veness and confidence.
Workers experienced in the youth field will develop programs based on the cultural, â‘family and economic backgrounds of the youth involved in the service.
Youth activities services give young people the opportunity to participate in supervised activities which offer scope for personal development such as self defence, health and nutrition programs, camps and recreational activities.
Mr Staples said the services were an extension of the Federal Government's soc±at justic~ strategy which has resulted in far-reaching refoPms in the areas of aged care, child care and programs for people with disabilities.
Youth activities services were an example of the Federal Government's commitment to providing 2 full range of services to meet the needs of Australian families he said.
