Tasmanian telecommunications receives further funding Local Government online initiatives will receive $4.7 million dollars in funding under the Commonwealth's Networking the Nation (NtN) program to enhance electronic service delivery across Tasmania.

Local Government initiatives accounted for the majority of the $5.3 million allocated to Tasmania in this round. Thirty-one new projects were approved for the State overall.

Since NtN was established in 1997, Tasmania has received more than $51 million in funding for telecommunications projects in regional areas.

One of the key projects in this round, administered by the Local Government Association of Tasmania, will provide rural, regional and remote communities in Tasmania with enhanced access to local government services.

At least 40 local government services will be made available online and a Local Government Entry Point will also be established on the Internet.

These initiatives will position Tasmania as a leader in local government online service access.

The Tasmanian projects are part of the $51 million NtN funding announced by the Prime Minister today. Since NtN was established in 1997, 616 projects totalling more than $289 million have been funded across Australia.

NtN is the Commonwealth Government's five-year Regional Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund. Applications are received from a variety of regional-based groups for projects ranging from mobile telephony through to Internet cafes and training.

For further information visit the NtN website at www.dcita.gov.au/ntn or free call 1800 674 058. Applications for funding can now be made online through the NtN web site. The next

NtN funding round closes on 1 August 2001.
