AEC DISCUSS REFERENDUM & ELECTORAL EXPERIENCES WITH PACIFIC COLLEAGUES

Australian Electoral Commission officials will meet today with their Pacific colleagues to discuss a range of issues including the recent referendum on the Republic, Special Minister of State Senator Ellison said today.

Senator Ellison said senior electoral officials from 14 Pacific Region countries would meet in Brisbane for two days to discuss major electoral issues in the region.

Countries attending the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand Electoral Administrators’ (PIANZEA) Network workshop include Australia, French Polynesia, Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Soloman Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.

Senator Ellison said the meeting would provide a unique opportunity for the electoral bodies from the region to network and address good governance issues.

"While the focus of the seminar is to address the key electoral issues relevant to the region for the next two years, officials will also share information about recent electoral experiences, " he said.

"In Australia’s case, the recent Referendum will provide an important opportunity to share with our Pacific colleagues the experience we gained from this historic event."

Senator Ellison said the second meeting of the PIANZEA network would continue the groups goal of encouraging communication and cooperation between electoral bodies and administrators in the Pacific region.

"Since the inaugural meeting in 1997, the network has been a very effective and active tool in the sharing of information and ideas."

"It is vital that we learn from other countries experiences in the areas of electoral reform, free and fair elections and the professionalism of electoral administrators."

Senator Ellison congratulated the AEC for its hard work and dedication to the Australian electoral process.
