Malcolm Turnbull MP, Federal Member for Wentworth, today encouraged Wentworth residents to

take time to honour those who served in World War II on the 60th anniversary of Victory in the

Pacific - 15 August 2005.

“On this day, 60 years ago, Victory in the Pacific was announced after Japan’s surrender to

Allied forces,” Mr Turnbull said.

“VP Day is an occasion for older generations to remember and for younger generations to reflect

on what it meant to Australians 60 years ago to learn of the Japanese surrender.”

“Following the announcement that the war was over, many Australians poured onto the streets,

dancing and waving flags in celebration.”

“Australians serving around the world looked forward to returning home, but their thoughts also

turned to those who did not live to see peace.”

“Some one million Australians served during World War II; about 40,000 were killed and more

than 30,000 were taken prisoner.”

Mr Turnbull said VP Day was being marked in Wentworth by commemorations supported by

funding from the Howard Government.

“I am delighted that $5,000 has been made available to Bondi Junction-Waverley RSL Sub-Branch and $2,000 to Rose Bay RSL Sub-Branch under the Howard Government’s Saluting Their

Service 2005 Programme. Both Clubs are holding commemoration ceremonies,” Mr Turnbull

“Today we take time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who suffered

and those who contributed on the home front in World War II.”

“To those who served in the defence of Australia, or who supported the war effort at home

during those dark days, we offer our deepest gratitude.”

“I encourage everyone in Wentworth to take time to think about those who served in World War

II and the important role they have in Australia’s history,” Mr Turnbull concluded.
