ALP Opts for Hamstring Inquiry on WMD

The new Crean Labor Opposition has fallen at the first hurdle by opting for the Joint Committee on ASIO, DSD and ASIS to investigate intelligence and government assessments of Iraq’s pre-war weapons of mass destruction, Greens Senator Bob Brown said.

“The Government dominates this committee. Its terms of reference are far too narrow and exclude, for example, the critical Office of National Assessment and Department of Defence.

The terms of reference are also too restrictive. Former ONA officer Andrew Wilkie, who has gone to London to appear before the UK inquiry, will be excluded from appearing here if the government wants him kept out.

“This is stupid for Labor. The Greens senate option is a stronger, far more sensible option,” Senator Brown said.
