Nicola Roxon MP Shadow Minister for Health MEDIA RELEASE

Ferguson must explain himself

Labor’s Shadow Minister for Health Nicola Roxon called on Liberal member for Bass Michael Ferguson to explain how he can support the Howard Government’s failing dental policy.

Mr Ferguson repeatedly interjected during debate on the Howard Government’s policy in the federal Parliament yesterday.

Labor voted against the Howard Government's failing and narrowly targeted dental scheme shambles - committing instead to use the money to fund up to 1 million dental consultations and treatments across the country.

“The Howard Government's failing scheme has provided assistance to only 68 people in the whole of Tasmania - not just his electorate of Bass, the whole of Tasmania - in the three years between July 2004 and June 2007.

“Labor’s plan to provide funding to State and Territory Governments will provide direct relief to the 650,000 people on public dental waiting lists around the country.

“With around 9000 people on public dental waiting lists in Tasmania, Mr Ferguson needs to explain to his constituents why assisting 10 or 20 people in his electorate is better than assisting up to a million people under Labor’s Dental Plan.”
