PRESS RELEASE

Joanna Gash MP Member for Gilmore

DON'T JUST STOP WITH ETHANOL 17 May 2006

Gilmore MP, Joanna Gash has continued her drive for alternative fuels with a call to Parliament to consider coal liquification as an additional fuel energy source to counter escalating world fuel prices.

In her speech (attached), Mrs Gash said the technology already exists but further research has not been cost effective due to the low oil prices up until now.

"With oil prices going up and up, this technology is becoming more affordable and we should be leading the world in this research considering we have only 0.3% of the total world oil reserves yet we have 8% of the worlds coal reserves.

"But we also have to be mindful that this technology is high in Carbon Dioxide emissions, which is not good for the environment.

"The world has only about 40 years worth of oil reserves left so now is the time we ought to be actively exploring alternative technologies', Mrs Gash said.
