WHY DID YOU CUT FAMILIES FUNDING PRIME MINISTER?

When the Prime Minister announces funding for local projects under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy this morning in Brisbane he should explain why he cut the budget of the program.

In last years budget, the Prime Minister cut $16.5 million from the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy, which targets early intervention and parenting programs and community building initiatives.

In the 2002-03 financial year $10 million was cut which left around 100 local programs across the nation without funding. This financial year a further $6.5 million has been gouged from the Strategy’s budget by the Prime Minister, leaving a further 65 communities without programs.

The Prime Minister will make much today of the projects that have received money to assist their local communities and local families. He is less likely to want to talk about 165 projects that have missed out because of his savage budget cuts.

Mr Howard should explain why, when the final Budget outcome was so much stronger than expected, he is denying Australian families and communities projects that would assist them to reduce welfare dependence, crime and build trust and confidence.

Performance Indicators As this measure revises funding for an existing measure, the existing performance indicators will be used.
