Howard Government dumps on South Australia, again

“After a decade-long site search, the Federal Government has made a complete mess of its selection of a South Australian sheep station (site 40a) as the national low-level nuclear waste dump site,” according to Shadow Minister for Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr.

“Labor, and the South Australian people, will not stand for it.

“Flying in the face of international protocols, it is a decision made on incomplete consultation, the marginalisation of Indigenous community views and in the face of massive South Australian opposition.

“Peter McGauran has starred in his very own comic opera. Act one: attempt to place a nuclear waste dump next to a rocket range (site 52a). Act two: choose a nearby sheep station instead because the owners don’t have as much clout as Western Mining Corporation (whose four-year campaign against their site being selected has clearly been successful).

“Minister McGauran’s strong-arm tactics in threatening South Australians have dramatically reduced both the credibility of the Government’s decision as well as the standing of the Howard Government.

“This is a national problem requiring a national solution. The Federal Government has failed the leadership test.

“It is now clear that Australians do not trust the Federal Government to resolve the critical nation-wide problem of radio-active waste management.

“The Howard Government has sought to coerce rather than consult. The only way to fix the Government’s mess is to start, virtually, from scratch. Labor will look again at the potential sites identified in a number of regions outside SA - but this time scientific suitability will not be the only criteria. Community opinions and concerns must be sought and taken into account.

“Labor has ruled South Australia out on the grounds that they have done enough, enduring the terrible and continuing legacy of the Maralinga tests.
