Indigenous Ambassadors to be role models at Croc Fest

23 August 2006

Minister for Human Services, the Hon. Joe Hockey MP, will be visiting the Meekatharra Croc Festival in Western Australia today to inspire young people to decide what they want to be.

“I’ll be joined in Meekatharra by our Indigenous Ambassadors, Australia ’s fastest sprint hurdler Kyle Vander-Kuyp and new Ambassador Australian women’s touch football champion Bo de la Cruz. Importantly they will be role models for young Indigenous children, encouraging them to think about their future and what they want to achieve,” Minister Hockey said.

“I can’t wait to join the kids and get involved in all the fun of Croc Festival,” said Minister Hockey.

This year’s Croc Festival began in Weipa in Far North Queensland in July, and since then has travelled to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and Halls Creek in Western Australia. It is designed to motivate and inspire Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth from around the country to live healthy lifestyles without tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. Activities include a careers market, health expo and sporting events.

“The Human Services agencies, Centrelink, Medicare Australia, Australian Hearing, the Child Support Agency, CRS Australia and Health Services Australia, have been running the "I want to be" workshop during the festival."

“Students are asked to choose what they’d like to be when they finish school. They then move through the interactive exhibition and get tips about how to pursue their chosen career."

“The festivals also give the agencies a chance to showcase the specialist Indigenous services they offer and the support they can provide to communities in rural and remote Australia.”

The visit to Croc Festival is part of day three of Minister Hockey’s week long visit to South Australia and Western Australia, putting the spotlight on Indigenous services delivered by the Human Services agencies.
