$50,000 REGIONAL ASSISTANCE FUNDING TO SUNRAYSIA MALLEE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD

The Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board Inc is to receive $50,000 for a local employment-generating project, John Forrest, Member for Mallee, said today.

Funding for the project is provided under the Government's Regional Assistance Programme as announced by the Hon Wilson Tuckey, Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government.

In a joint statement Federal Member for Mallee John Forrest and Mr Don Carrazza, Chair of the Sunraysia ACC expressed their commitment to the ongoing development of the region through the approval of projects under the Regional Assistance Program, funded by the Department of Transport & Regional Services.

Mr Forrest said, "This project, Value Adding to Sunraysia Mallee Food and Wine Industry, provides seed funding to link the food and wine industry in the region which crosses three state borders (NSW, Victoria and South Australia).

"The project is a strategic first step in identifying, initiating and linking the right stakeholders to incorporate new technologies, develop local and overseas markets, and promote skill and information sharing.

"The project will also co-ordinate the industry conference planned for February 2003. Through the conference and other activities undertaken local producers will be given the opportunity to network among themselves as well as with other significant industry players", Mr Forrest said.

Mr Carrazza is delighted by this announcement of RAP funding.

"The Food and Wine Industries are vitally important to this region. This project will enhance the growth of the fresh food and wine industries by encouraging the development and uptake of value adding technologies, best management practices and new product and processing opportunities. The conference also provides an ideal environment to showcase our regional industry base." Mr Carrazza said.

These outcomes will generate new business and employment opportunities in the region and the Sunraysia Area Consultative Committee has endorsed the project as a significant employment generating opportunity for the local community.

"The Sunraysia ACC would like to congratulate the proponent, Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board for their hard work in developing this submission for the Regional Assistance Program. By creating opportunities for the expansion of the food and wine industries, this project will provide a number of positive growth outcomes for the region. The Sunraysia ACC is always keen to work with community and industry organisations to create opportunities for the area." Mr Carrazza said.

Mr Forrest said, "Projects such as these demonstrate how a partnership between government and the community can enhance local employment opportunities in our region.

By accessing local skills and experience we can achieve sustainable employment growth that will benefit the whole community", he said.
