MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA027 21 March 2006

GOVERNMENT THANKS OUTGOING CHAIR OF NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Professor Ken Wiltshire AO for his outstanding contribution to the work of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), through his chairmanship of the Australian National Commission for UNESCO from 1993 to 2006.

Throughout this period, the Australian Government has greatly appreciated Professor Wiltshire’s strong leadership and guidance of the National Commission. I would particularly like to acknowledge the special contributions he has made in his roles as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board from 1999 to 2005, and as a key participant in the working group on UNESCO reform.

Under Professor Wiltshire’s chairmanship, the Australian National Commission for UNESCO has recorded a significant number of achievements internationally and in the Asia-Pacific region. He was personally involved in promoting the needs and interests of the Pacific across all of UNESCO’s fields of endeavour. Professor Wiltshire was also instrumental in the establishment of the UNESCO Youth Forum and in promoting UNESCO’s outreach to young people.

I will announce shortly new appointments to the National Commission for UNESCO.
