JOINT MEDIA RELEASE

SENATOR IAN MACDONALD    JOHN ANDERSON MP

Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government

Deputy Prime Minister Minister for Transport and Regional Services

MORE COMMUNITIES RECEIVE RURAL TRANSACTION CENTRES FUNDING

An additional 34 rural communities across Australia have received funding under the Federal Government’s Rural Transaction Centres (RTC) programme.

The Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson MP, and the Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, today announced funding for 34 rural communities to undertake business planning as part of the $70 million RTC Programme.

Mr Anderson said that the Federal Government remained committed to the restoration of basic services to small rural communities.

“RTCs are an important part of the Federal Government plan to restore, and in many cases extend, basic but vital services to small country towns,” Mr Anderson said.

Senator Macdonald said that more than 290 communities are or have been involved in the RTC programme, with 18 RTCs operational across the country.

“The business planning process assists communities to identify possible services which could be incorporated into an RTC and to assess the likelihood of their success,” Senator Macdonald said.

Examples of services in some existing RTCs include: banking, post, phone, fax, photocopying, word processing and internet access, Medicare Easyclaim, Centrelink services and rooms for visiting professionals.

“This demonstrates the diverse range of services that can be included in an RTC.

Feedback from a number of operational RTCs suggests that they are playing a pivotal role in the community, by providing much needed services, and also by demonstrating the value of leadership and community involvement in community driven projects.

A complete list of recently approved Business Planning applications, with a brief description of each is attached.
