Commonwealth signs 4 year $4 billion housing agreement

The Minister for Family and Com munity Services, Senator Jocelyn Newman, has signed the 1999 Commonwealth State Housing Agreement, paving the way for States and Territories to sign up to the new four year agreement.

“The new agreement will provide more than $4 billion for public and community housing and offers funding certainty for four years for States and Territories”, Senator Newman said.

For the first time in its history, the CSHA will include bilateral housing agreements between the Commonwealth and each State and Territory. Bilateral agreements will provide unprecedented flexibility in meeting housing needs in each jurisdiction.

“The new CSHA represents a tremendous opportunity for public and community housing and is a clear signal of the Government’s support for families and individuals in need.”

“The Commonwealth has worked with the States to reach agreement on the new CSHA and I am confident that State and Territory Housing Ministers are ready to sign up. We can then get on with the job of finalising bilateral housing agreements to deliver housing outcomes that support families and contribute to sustainable communities.”

Senator Newman met with the State and Territory housing ministers on May 3, 1999 to discuss the new Commonwealth State Housing Agreement.
