$3,480 Grant to Enhance Submarine Lookout Memorial at Elliott Heads Thursday, 19 May 2005

The Elliott Heads and District Ratepayers and Residents Association will enhance the current war memorial site at Submarine Lookout at Elliott Heads with the help of a $3,480 grant under the Australian Government’s Commemorations program Saluting Their Service. Member for Hinkler Paul Neville said improving the memorial meant the local community would have a suitable place to remember and honour the contribution of Australians who have served in wars, conflicts and peace operations since Federation. “Submarine Lookout currently has two small memorials and there is one bench seat close to them. The aim of this grant is to provide more seating around the memorials and to add a commemorative sign,” he said. “The site is dedicated in remembrance of the volunteers who kept watch at this point during World War II for hostile submarines and ships.” “The memorial site is a main focus for Anzac Day activities with participation from local schools, the Salvation Army, naval cadets, Council and the community.” “This project will provide a fitting tribute to the district’s servicemen and women and ensure that the younger generations are reminded of the sacrifices that veterans made for them as well as the reality of war and the need to avoid conflict where possible.” “The Elliott Heads and District Ratepayer and Residents Association is to be congratulated on its initiative and I am pleased to see this project receive the Government’s support.” Since the launch of the commemorations program in 1997, more than $9 million in grants to more than 4,000 ex-service and community organisations has been approved. Projects supported have included the restoration and construction of community war memorials, displays of wartime memorabilia and commemoration of significant wartime anniversaries.
