THE HON DARYL WILLIAMS AM QC MP

NEW DIRECTOR FOR THE CLASSIFICATION BOARD AND THE OFFICE OF FILM AND LITERATURE CLASSIFICATION

I am pleased to announce today the appointment of Mrs Kathryn Paterson as t he new Director of the Office of Film and Literature Classification.

The Director chairs the Classification Board and oversees the classification of publications, films, videos and computer games and the approval of advertisements for these materials. The Director is also the Chief Executive of the Office of Film and Literature Classification.

Mrs Paterson is an Australian citizen who is currently Chief Censor of Film and Literature and Chief Executive of the Classification Office in New Zealand.

Mrs Paterson also has considerable experience in the classification field in Australia, having served as a member of the Australian Film Censorship Board from 1988 to 1991.

Mrs Paterson previously held the positions of a Deputy Film Censor and Regional Inspector of Literature Classification.

Given her extensive management skills and personal attributes, I am confident that Mrs Paterson is the right person to lead the Office of Film and Literature Classification through the significant period of change that lies ahead, and to maintain the Board’s capacity to be attuned to community attitudes, expectations and standards.

Mrs Paterson will take up her appointment as Director on 11 January 1999 for a four year term.
