Peter McGauran MP Commonwealth Minister for Science

Media Release

25 March 2004

Australia and New Zealand today strengthened their position as world leaders in forest research.

Australian Government Science Minister, Peter McGauran, and New Zealand's Minister for Research, Science and Technology, Pete Hodgson unveiled plans for the formation of a major joint venture in trans-Tasman forest industry research and development.

“The leading forestry research agencies of Australia and New Zealand will come together to share knowledge with the aim of becoming a larger player in the area of global forestry research,” Mr McGauran said.

Australia’s CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products and New Zealand’s Forest Research have established this important partnership to focus on research and development for plantation forestry and related processing industries.

“The joint venture will assist both nations’ forestry industries to develop world-class products and services,” Mr McGauran said,

“The partnership will maximise opportunities by combining the research efforts of CSIRO and Forest Research in New Zealand,” Mr McGauran said.

“Creating a single point of contact for these two world leading science organisations will benefit their current customers and partners and help them establish relationships with potential customers,” Mr McGauran said.

Mr McGauran said developing an internationally competitive leading-edge research organisation will benefit export industries both here in Australia and in New Zealand.

“The timing of the deal is regarded by both governments as crucial, particularly given the rapid rate at which the world forestry and forest products industry is growing,” Mr McGauran concluded.
