NEW ACTING COMMISSIONER APPOINTED TO SNOWY SCHEME

The Minister for Industry, Science and Resources, Senator Nick Minchin, has announced the appoi ntment of Mr Terry Charlton as Acting Commissioner, Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority.

“Mr Chariton has also been appointed the Chief Executive Officer designate of Snowy Hydro Limited, the proposed company name for the Snowy Scheme when it is corporatised,” Senator Minchin said.

“As CEO designate Mr Charlton will work closely with Mr Tony Cotton, the Chairman designate for Snowy Hydro Limited, to lead the Showy electricity business towards becoming a fully corporatised profit-making entity with a new commercial culture.

“Mr Charlton will bring strong leadership to his new position. He has had considerable experience in large, complex industrial environments such as Tubemakers of Australia and BHP. He also has recent high level exposure to the hydro electricity business and the production of electricity on an international scale.

“His appointment is supported by New South Wales and Victoria, the other shareholder governments in the Snowy Scheme.”

Senator Minchin also announced that Mr Vin Good would stay on with the Authority as Acting Associate Commissioner.

“Mr Good has helped to steer the Authority while we have been seeking a new Commissioner to take us through to corporatisation. His appointment will ensure a seamless transfer to the new management structure.”

Mr Charlton is expected to take up his appointment on Monday 16 August 1999.

Senator Minchin said that Mr Charlton’s appointment and the new management structure would provide the necessary impetus for the task of meshing together the generation and trading arms of the business in preparation for Snowy corporatisation.

Senator Minchin confirmed that consistent with Government policy, Cooma would remain the headquarters of the Snowy Scheme.
