Industry Alert for Vocational Rehabilitation Services

An industry alert to private sector providers to tender for Australian Government-funded vocational

rehabilitation services has been released by the Minister for Workforce Participation, Dr Sharman Stone.

Dr Stone announced last month that providing vocational rehabilitation services would be opened up to the

private sector.

"From 1 July 2007 under the Government’s Welfare to Work reforms, services for about 22 000 people will be

offered by private sector providers," Dr Stone said.

"An open tender process conducted by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations later this year

will set the ball rolling.

"We want to give providers of rehabilitation services maximum time to consider this new government service

opportunity," Dr Stone said.

Information sessions will be held in locations across Australia. Interested parties will be able to book a place by

contacting DEWR’s Employment Services Purchasing hotline on 1300 733 514.

Dr Stone said the move to allow the private sector to also provide rehabilitation services would ensure that

people who need work related rehabilitation have the best choice of assistance to help them back into work.

"Offering choice in vocational rehabilitation services means individuals will go to the service that best suits them.

The competition that results will promote innovation and better ways to help people overcome disability and

rejoin the workforce as soon as possible.

"The Government has made a $3.5 billion-plus investment over the next three years to help people on welfare to

find and retain jobs," she said.

The Industry Alert, in booklet form, tells potential tenderers the nature of the customer base and the pathways

by which those customers can be referred to a provider from 1 July 2007.

An Exposure Draft covering the contract and service requirements, and performance management is proposed to

be released in mid August. The Request for Tender is proposed to be released at the end of September on

AusTender.
