QUEENSLANDERS TO PAY FOR TUCKEY’S GRANDSTANDING

Wilson Tuckey is threatening to withhold $274 million in federal grants owed to Queensland Councils because he doesn’t agree with the method used by successive Queensland Governments to divide the money up among councils.

It is typical of Mr. Tuckey that when he doesn’t immediately get his own way he resorts to political threats and thuggery.

This dispute has been going on for more than ten years and is currently the subject of an independent review by the Queensland Grants Commission.

The system used in Queensland results in relatively higher grants for smaller councils, mainly in rural and regional areas, and less for some larger urban councils.

The question of how such grants should be allocated is a complex one and any decision ought to await the outcome of the review by the Queensland Grants Commission as well as the current federal parliamentary inquiry into the local government financing.

Mr. Tuckey would rather grandstand and fight with a State Labor Government than solve a longstanding problem in a cool headed rational way.

His approach doesn’t solve problems. It creates them.

Mr. Tuckey ought to immediately withdraw his threat and let the money flow to the Queensland community.
