KERRY O’BRIEN LABOR SENATOR FOR TASMANIA SHADOW MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRIES

30 October 2003

LIVE EXPORT REVIEW DETAILS MUST BE REVEALED

Labor demands the release of full details of the Howard Government’s “independent” review of the live export industry.

Agriculture Minister Warren Truss has announced partial details of a review over the past two weeks but has failed to release key details including its formal terms of reference.

Mr Truss has announced review panel members but failed to reveal how livestock industry groups, animal welfare organisations and concerned Australians can contact the panel members or make submissions to the review.

Labor supports an open and transparent review process involving public hearings.

The current review is the fourth review of Australia’s live export industry in the past four years.

Mr Truss has ignored or bungled the implementation of recommendations from previous inquiries.

The result has been ongoing unacceptable mortality events involving Australian sheep and cattle.

The failure to announce full terms of reference or even a postal address for the review suggests the Minister is no more serious about this review than its predecessors.

Labor supports an independent review of the live export industry with the capacity to expose the manifest inadequacy of Mr Truss’ administration and the power to propose a bold reform plan.

A sham inquiry is not acceptable to Labor or the hundreds of thousands of Australians appalled by Mr Truss’ indifference to the plight of animals in the live trade and the economic security of Australia’s livestock producers.
