EMPLOYMENT GROWTH MUST BE SUSTAINED

I welcome the fall in unemployment and increase in full time employment revealed in today’s labour force figures.

But it is disturbing that there are 8000 fewer full time jobs than there were 12 months ago.

The challenge now is to make sure that we get a sustained decrease in the unemployment rate. This is why Labor is talking about tax credits and a policy agenda to build bridges from welfare to work.

This month’s improvement reinforces my argument that the government should be able to deliver a surplus budget without slugging pensioners and the disabled.

The Budget will be an opportunity for the Government to do more to assist the 620,000 Australians who are out of work. Now is not the time to give up on them.
