KEEPING RURAL CONSUMERS INFORMED

The Minister for Customs and Consumer Affairs, Warren Truss, today released a rural an d remote consumer information pack which will provide a useful resource for organisations and individuals.

The Information Pack has been developed as part of the Consumer Information initiative announced by the Government in its 1998/99 Budget.

“The Information Pack draws together a range of information on consumer issues relevant for people living in regional and remote Australia," Mr Truss said.

“These include details of the Commonwealth Financial Counselling Program, information about electronic commerce and a safety fact sheet on children’s household cots. It also includes a number of useful contacts and referral points for following up specific consumer inquiries and gives an easy steps guide on what to do when you have a consumer problem.”

The Information Pack was developed in response to the findings of a survey of 1,000 rural and remote Australians. The results of the survey were published in the 1997 report, The Consumer Education Needs of Rural and Remote Australians.

“The survey told us that rural consumers need more information, particularly on issues such as financial counselling and product safety. We have provided contacts to enable rural consumers to get appropriate information when a problem arises,” Mr Truss said.

“The Information Pack is intended to assist those who advise consumers in country Australia. The information it contains is concise and designed to enable individual items to be easily photocopied or faxed.”
