MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA4 11 January 2005

NEW CHAIRMAN FOR AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA INSTITUTE

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Allan Taylor AM as the new Chairman of the Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII).

Mr Taylor succeeds Philip Flood AO who retired from the Board on 24 November 2004. The appointment is part-time for a period of three years.

The Institute’s work has made a significant contribution to the further development of the bilateral relationship between Australia and Indonesia.

As a senior diplomat with extensive international experience, including a term as Australian Ambassador to Indonesia from 1993 to 1996, Mr Taylor is ideally qualified to lead the AII at this important time in history.

Mr Taylor has most recently been Ambassador-in-Residence at the University of Oklahoma in the USA. He was Director-General of ASIS from 1998 to 2003 and has also held senior Government positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

His appointment reflects the importance the Australian Government places on developing our relations with Indonesia at all levels.
