WELCOME HOME DIGGERS The Chief of Staff, Land Command, Brigadier David Warner, was today joined by family and friends to officially welcome home members of 16th Air Defence Regiment (16th AD Regt) returning from overseas duty.

Soldiers from 16th AD Regt based at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills, were aboard HMAS KANIMBLA as part of Australia’s commitment to the international coalition against terrorism.

HMAS KANIMBLA was operating in the Persian Gulf as part of the Multinational Interception Force, enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq.

The contingent from 16th AD Regt augmented KANIMBLA’s air defence capability for the ship during its five and a half month deployment to the Gulf.

Also welcomed home today were soldiers of the unit returning from a six-month deployment to East Timor.

These members were deployed as part of the Fourth Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4 RAR) Battalion Group. They provided Civil Military Affairs liaison-which involved community activities ranging from sports carnivals through to rebuilding roads, schools and Health Centres.

BRIG Warner said the soldiers from 16th AD Regt played an important role in both the coalition against terrorism and East Timor and their contributions have shown them to be a capable, well trained and well equipped Regiment.

"The experience and exposure that members of 16th AD Regt have received has seen not only the members, but the Regiment as a whole, gain professionally.

"It is also important at this time to recognise and remember the contributions of support, love and understanding made by families and friends, which is vital for the success of any deployment," BRIG Warner said.

The welcome home parade commenced at 9:30am and was followed by a barbecue lunch for the members and their families.
