MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA172 2 December 2001

TRIPLE BOMBING IN JERUSALEM

I was horrified to hear this morning of the three bombings in Jerusalem overnight, which are reported to have killed at least 12 people and injured many more.

I condemn this terrorism as morally reprehensible in that it is aimed at innocent civilians, and as tragically futile in that all it achieves is the undermining of peace in the Middle East.

Today I spoke with the Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr Ehud Olmert, who is visiting Australia, to express Australia’s outrage at the attack and to offer our sympathy and condolences to him and the citizens of his city.

Violence will never solve the differences between Palestinians and Israelis. I urge both sides to do all they can to get back to productive negotiations, which in the end are the only way a comprehensive solution that deals with the concerns of everyone can be found.
