Brown backs TNPA call for halt at Recherche Bay

21st Jul 2005

The Tasmanian and Federal governments should halt bulldozing of an access road for a lodge development at Recherche Bay, Greens senator Bob Brown said today.

“The high historical value of the French visits to Recherche Bay in 1792 and ’93 and particular importance of the East Cockle Creek development site was not known when the Resource Planning Development Commission or state or federal ministers allowed this development.

“The environmental impact statement failed to take due account of the world heritage values of the French and Aboriginal sites,” Senator Brown said.

“This is a shemozzle. But probity demands a full and proper reassessment in light of the public awareness and international importance of this site,” Senator Brown said.
