The Hon. Danna Vale MP Minister for Veterans' Affairs Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence

Media Release

The Federal Government is committed to providing for the lifelong financial security of the families of Australian Defence personnel killed in action.

Benefits to war widows and their dependent children include free, comprehensive health care, military compensation and superannuation, on top of the war widows’ pension which is tax-free and non-means-tested for life, regardless of the widow’s marital or income/employment status and orphan’s pension and educational assistance.

The total value of these lifelong comprehensive benefits surpasses the large one-off lump sum payments issued by courts to civilian claimants, much of which evaporates in legal fees and health costs.

The Federal Government also remains committed to the introduction of a new military compensation scheme. As part of the development of the new scheme the Federal Government has been liaising widely with the Defence and ex-service community.

The Federal Government will not be rushed into introducing a new scheme which does not have the support of the ex-service community. We want to get it right. We will not proceed with the legislation until all issues have been resolved with Defence and veterans groups.

However, the new scheme will maintain the Government’s commitment to providing life-long financial security and health care for personnel and their families.
