28 February 2005 C10/2005

KIMBERLEY REGION OF WA BENEFITING FROM GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

The Kimberley region is now experiencing the benefits delivered through the Australian Government's Sustainable Regions Programme, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Cobb, said today.

Visiting Broome to meet with the Sustainable Regions and Area Consultative Committees, Mr Cobb said that the Kimberley was further proof that the Australian Government's regional programmes are working.

"$12 million has been allocated to the Kimberley Sustainable Region to support economic development and community services throughout the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

"To date nearly $10 million has been allocated to projects such as $660,000 for the stage 2 extensions to the Broome Airport and $350,000 for the Kimberley Sustainable Tourist Project to name just two projects, said Mr Cobb

In addition to the Sustainable Regions funding, individuals and community groups can also apply for funding through the Australian Governments Regional Partnerships Programme.

"Regional Partnerships is helping communities help themselves, said Mr Cobb.

Mr Cobb is meeting with the Kimberley Area Consultative Committee to listen to where they believe government support will achieve the greatest community benefit, and to provide information on the directions and priorities of government for the programme.

"Regional Australia needs jobs, said Mr Cobb.

"Greater economic activity creates opportunity for our kids and provides for a future without the need to move to our cities away from family and friends.

"Strong economic prospects also encourage further investments in the services that enhance our communities.

"This is the purpose of the Regional Partnerships Programme and the reason why the Government is supporting our regional communities by providing partnership funding.

"The Australian Government supports regional Australia and through programmes such as

Sustainable Regions and Regional Partnerships, is helping our regions to develop their own futures," said Mr Cobb.
