John Anderson

Minister for Transport and Regional Services

1st December 1998

The Member for Bradfield, Brendan Nelson, is the new chairman of the Sydney Airport Community Forum.

The Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, made the announcement on Sydney radio this morning.

The Sydney Airport Community Forum (SACF) is responsible for advising the Government on the abatement of aircraft noise and the related environmental issues at Sydney Airport.

Mr Anderson said: “Dr Nelson will be an excellent chairman, and I am looking forward to working with him.

“The Howard-Fischer Government is committed to sharing the noise generated by Sydney Airport. Our long-term operating plan has been very successful in sharing the aircraft noise,” he said.

“For example, aircraft movements to the north of the airport have fallen from about 10,000 a month under Labor to about 6,000 a month now. This is a reduction of 40 per cent.”

The forum consists of Federal and State Members of Parliament, as well as local government and community representatives.

Mr Anderson also announced that the Member for Cook, Bruce Baird, will be a member of the forum.
