MEDIA RELEASE

Senator Chris Evans Labor Senator for Western Australia Shadow Minister for Defence

SENATOR HILL SHOULD RESIGN

The Senate today censured the Defence Minister Robert Hill for his failure to respond adequately to concerns about gross abuse of prisoners in Iraq.

The Minister has failed to meet his legal and moral responsibilities as Minister for Defence.

Despite numerous official communications from July last year the Government continued to deny knowledge of the Iraq prisoner abuse.

The Minister has refused to accept his responsibilities and resign, leaving the Senate no option but to censure him.

The Minister should reconsider his position given the loss of public confidence in his performance.

The Government is still refusing to provide the public with a copy of the 61 page Defence fact-finding report that the Prime Minister promised when he apologised for misleading Australians and the Parliament.

The Iraqi prisoner abuse fiasco won’t go away until the Government come clean with the Australian public about its knowledge of these matters.
