SENATOR ANDREW BARTLETT Queensland Democrat Senator QUEENSLAND’S ONLY INDEPENDENT VOICE IN THE SENATE

Federal and State Governments Must Do More For People With A Disability

Queensland Democrat Senator Andrew Bartlett has urged the federal and state governments to put politics to one side at today’s Ministerial meeting negotiating the next Disability Agreement.

“A recent Senate Inquiry found beyond doubt that there is a need for greater resourcing of services and support for people with disabilities and their carers,” Senator Bartlett said.

“It would be the height of negligence if the federal government did not act on the unanimous findings of this Senate report.

“It is easy to point fingers at the states and find flaws with what they are doing, but finger pointing and playing politics will just leave people with disabilities carrying an even greater burden.

“This is not just about money -support also needs to be provided in more effective ways - but there is no doubt that more funding is also needed as part of any viable solution.

“Governments must also recognise that supporting people with disabilities also provides benefits to the wider community.

“The Commonwealth State/Territory Disability Agreement is not some sort of charity - it is about assisting people with disabilities to reach their full potential and contribute more fully in the wider society and economy.

“The Democrats urge all governments to leave their politics at the door and do what it takes to reach a sensible, balanced result that will provide a good investment for the future to the entire community,” Senator Bartlett concluded.
